New Flyer Receives CALSTART's Blue Sky Award

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; November 22, 2004
CALSTART, North America’s leading advanced transportation organization, announced that New Flyer Industries Limited has been selected as the overall winner of its prestigious Blue Sky Award for 2004. The Blue Sky Award is given for outstanding marketplace contributions to advanced, sustainable transportation that cleans the air, improves energy efficiency and helps reduce greenhouse emissions, and thereby, improves the quality of life in major urban centers.

New Flyer was chosen for its pioneering work in integrating and testing alternative fuel and hybrid drive systems for the North American transit industry. These advanced and environmentally-friendly buses represent a significant portion the company’s bus orders, which indicates commercial acceptance of alternative fuels and hybrids for transit applications.

"New Flyer is honored to have our company’s commitment to fuel-efficient transit systems recognized," noted John Marinucci, President and CEO of New Flyer Industries Limited. "This award is further testament to our demonstrated commitment to delivering new technologies and serves as another milestone in our legacy of innovation. At the same time, it recognizes our customers, who are committed to improving the quality of life in their cities and communities while conserving non-renewable fossil fuels."

New Flyer began developing green transportation solutions in the mid-1990’s and delivered its first hybrid vehicle in 1998. New Flyer’s commitment to continual innovation has resulted in its leadership position in hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles. New Flyer has more hybrid vehicles on the road accumulating more revenue service miles than all other North American manufacturers combined.

"We are proud to honor New Flyer’s industry-leading achievements with this award," said John Boesel, President and CEO of CALSTART. "New Flyer has set the standard for the transit marketplace with respect to the benefits and capabilities of advanced transportation technologies and fuels."

In addition to hybrid vehicle leadership, New Flyer has improved the impact of its manufacturing operations and facilities on the environment. Since 2002, New Flyer’s Winnipeg facility has reduced harmful volatile organic compound emissions by 46% plant-wide and in excess of 70% in specifically-targeted areas. The St. Cloud, Minnesota, facility was recently acknowledged as a significant contributor in helping the city of St. Cloud receive the Most Valuable Pollution Prevention Award from the National Pollution Prevention Council. New Flyer was recently recognized by General Motors’ Mission Green Tour and is actively working toward certification of its environmental management systems to the ISO 14001 global standard.
