New Flyer has long-standing history of offering low-emission, alternative-fueled buses to the North American transit industry and has developed many of the standards that ensure heavy-duty vehicles of all types are safe and reliable.

Transit properties and organizations requiring alternative-fueled vehicles can choose between compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquid natural gas (LNG) in a variety of models ranging from 30, 35, 40 and 60-foot buses. A modular approach to New Flyer’s design enables the engineering of any size bus, while still maintaining the minimum service requirement recommended by white book standards.

Fuel System Description
A typical alternative fuel system is comprised of roof tank storage, a fuel fill system, engine compartment components, fuel lines, and a high pressure fill system.

CNG is a high-pressure system operating at a normal pressure of up to 3600 pounds per square inch (psi), with CNG composite fuel cylinders offering the optimum combination of lightweight and durability. Cylinder construction is an aluminum collar interlocking with a high-density polyethylene thermoplastic liner and is wound using a carbon/glass and fiberglass outer skin. The final outer shell includes an energy absorbing material that protects the cylinder from abrasion. Fueling nozzle and receptacles conform to NGV1 standard, while fuel lines are bright, annealed high-quality stainless steel hydraulic tubing, type 304 or 316 seamless stainless steel, conforming to ASTM A269.

An LNG fuel system is a low pressure system designed for normal operating pressure of 230 psi. Fuel lines are fully annealed high-quality stainless steel hydraulic tubing type 304 or 316 seamless stainless steel.

Dependability
New Flyer is the leader in alternative-fueled vehicles with more buses on the road than any other heavy-duty bus manufacturer.  Making certain that our bus and its components endure throughout the vehicle’s useful life, New Flyer offers a high grade stainless steel fuel system and components that increase dependability and longevity. Both CNG and LNG bus designs have successfully completed Altoona testing.

Safety
Since 1930, New Flyer has earned an exceptional reputation for rider and driver safety.  In the development of natural gas vehicles, New Flyer has designed and installed fuel systems to meet strict gas codes. The fuel system in a natural gas bus complies with ANSI NGV 3.1/CAN CGA-12.3, NFPA 52/57, and CAN/CGA-B149.4. All alternative fuel buses require a fire suppression system (purchased from and installed by New Flyer) with interlocks that provide a failsafe method to prevent the bus from starting when fueling or performing maintenance on the fuel system.

Maintenance
An easily-accessible, gull-wing enclosure on top of the bus provides easy access to natural gas tanks requiring service or inspection. The innovative enclosure keeps unwanted materials and moisture from entering the fuel tank area, while enabling fueling from the curbside rear.
