We are the industry leader in bringing new technology to the market and are proud to offer a complete range of hybrid-electric bus solutions to meet your transportation service needs.
New Flyer hybrid buses have been on the road since 1997, longer than any other manufacturer in the US or Canada. Our buses have accumulated over 12 million service miles – more than all other manufacturers combined. We have minimized changes from the basic vehicle, ensuring a seamless introduction to bus fleets and operators. During the design process, maintenance and repair were two crucial issues that could not be compromised, so our development team limited the amount of new parts and procedures to assist customers who would eventually operate hybrid buses.
As a result, our customers have experienced virtually no impact to their current maintenance practices and technicians are immediately familiar with the bus. As with all our products, training, service, parts and documentation are available throughout the US and Canada.
Our hybrid buses offer many benefits to our customers including:
Increased fuel economy
Fuel economy improvements have been reported at 14-30%, which offers two additional benefits. Using less fuel obviously results in lower fuel expenditures and ultimately reduces the impact of changing fuel prices on transit agency budgets. It also reduces the amount of time spent refueling buses by up to 30%.
Reduced emissions
Our hybrid buses offer reduced emissions (compared with standard diesel buses) to meet or exceed local emissions standards. Independent testing has shown reductions in particulate matter, CO2 and NOx emissions of up to 90%. Our hybrid engines are EPA Certified to 2.5 NOx and 0.05 PM, g/BHP-H.
Improved performance
Our parallel hybrid vehicles accelerate smoothly and quickly from 0 to 40 MPH at gross vehicle weight in just 23.3 seconds with top speeds at over 65 MPH. These hybrids have plenty of power to take on the hills with gradability at over 20° . Also, by routing many of the peripheral systems (such as the HVAC system, compressors, etc.) through the electrical system, more power from the engine is dedicated to moving the bus, further increasing performance.
Improved reliability
By augmenting torque to the engine with an electric drive system during acceleration, engine wear is greatly reduced. King County Transit reports that the mean distance between road calls for any reason (not necessarily to do with the drive system) for its New Flyer hybrids is in excess of 7,200 miles. This translates into significant savings in cost-per-mile operating expenses.
Efficient braking and extended brake life
The regenerative braking system has two significant benefits.
It diverts energy, which would be lost to friction through conventional braking, into the battery where it is stored for future use by the electrical system.
It also extends the life of the brakes significantly. Between 0 and 10 MPH operators can use the electric drive to smoothly stop the vehicle, thereby reducing wear on brake drums and brake pads to extend brake life. Less brake maintenance means less money spent on labor and materials.
Improved passenger experience
Hybrid buses are quieter, cleaner, and run more smoothly than conventional systems. Passengers take pride in doing their part in taking care of the environment while utilizing some of the most advanced technology in the industry.
